5 tips to save money on Valentine’s Day

After a long, cold month to start the New Year, love is in the air! Prepare for Cupid’s arrow, as the 14th February is just around the corner. Whether you’re an old romantic at heart or just want to find a gift for the person in your life, we’ve put together five top tips on how you can save money this Valentine’s Day and make your other half feel special without spending a fortune.

1. Dinner for two at home

If you’re on a Valentine’s Day budget, why not prepare a home-cooked meal for your partner? Either make their favourite meal or get creative with a new dish. If cooking isn’t your thing, you could always order a pizza (don’t forget your NUS Extra card includes discounts at Dominos) or check out meals for two at M&S. Don’t forget to add the romance factor with a few candles and a romantic movie – The Notebook, anyone?

2. An evening with your NUS card

Worried about expensive meals out? Fear not – your NUS Extra card offers a saving of up to 25% at a number of popular restaurants including Zizzi’s and Chiquitos. Treat your other half to a lovely meal and knowing that you’ve saved a few pounds, you could even splash out on pudding.

3. DIY present

Forget overspending on flowers and chocolate, save your pennies and get creative this Valentine’s Day. Make your own romantic card, write a poem or even put together a personalised photo frame with pictures of the two of you. A creative present shows you’ve gone the extra mile and won’t break the bank either.

4. Valentines vouchers, anyone?

Keep an eye out for any offers available through websites such as Groupon for spa treatments or activity afternoons. Romance doesn’t always mean flowers and chocolate – by spending the day together doing something fun, it means you get to enjoy the treat as well!

5. Get cosy with the Co-op

If you’re a real romantic at heart and feel that Valentine’s Day is all about roses, chocolates and a cute teddy bear, make sure you check out your local Co-op. With your NUS Extra card you get 10% off in-store, so you can treat your other half and show them just how much you love them.
