Nursery insurance FAQs
Still not sure about insurance for your nursery? We’ve pulled together some frequently asked questions to help.
What insurance does a nursery need?
Due to the unique nature of nurseries and associated activities, each establishment will have specific risks to protect against.
Rather than taking out several types of nursery school insurance separately, you can choose to work with Endsleigh, who has dedicated insurance packages designed to meet the specific needs of nurseries and similar organisations. This means cover is provided for a wide range of children’s activities and childcare settings (registered or non-registered).
Your early years education establishment may need a range of cover such as the below. Please note that some of these covers are required by law.
- Public and products' liability insurance
Anyone providing childcare services, such as nurseries, playgroups, creches, kindergartens, Montessori schools etc., will legally need to have public liability insurance in place. This covers your nursery for your legal liability in a range of different circumstances such as an injury to a child or third party (such as a parent/visitor), or for accidental loss or damage to a third party’s property.
It will also cover you if a claim occurs from a product sold or supplied by your nursery, plus for various activities such as forest schools, animal handling, swimming, bouncy castles, trampolines, fundraising events and more.
- Employers’ liability insurance
Employers’ liability insurance is similar to public and products’ liability insurance, but for staff. If your nursery employs staff (whether that be paid staff, volunteers, trainees or those undertaking work experience), you will be legally required to have employers’ liability insurance in place. This protects your nursery against claims made following injury or illness caused by work.
- Buildings and contents cover
Although usually not a legal requirement, with so much financial (and emotional) investment in your nursery, it makes sense to have children’s day nursery insurance in place to protect the premises and its contents should the unexpected happen. Cover can protect against a wide variety of risks such as fire, flood, storm, theft and accidental and malicious damage.
With Endsleigh’s nursery insurance in the UK, contents cover is included as standard, including cover for loss and damage* that takes place at your premises and in transit. Buildings cover can be added on if required.
- Business interruption insurance
Provides cover if you are unable to continue operating as a result of an insured peril i.e. accidental damage, fire, flood, storm. This insurance covers the loss of income or additional costs incurred following physical damage to your property.
This is an important area of cover that can often be miscalculated and could have a detrimental impact on your ability to continue operating when such disasters strike.
- Professional indemnity
This protects you against claims made in respect of your legal liability for losses arising from a breach of professional duty.
Endsleigh’s nursery business insurance also includes a variety of covers such as:
- Legal expenses
- Employment practices liability (for example, employment tribunals for allegations of unfair dismissal)
- Professional indemnity
- Directors’ and officers’ liability and critical cover
- Contents in transit
- Officials’ personal defects
- Children’s personal defects
- Deterioration of refrigerated stock
- Equipment breakdown
- Loss of registration certificate
- Personal accident for children and officials
- Officials’ personal money
- Employee dishonesty
- Crisis containment
