Insuring your gadgets can be the sensible thing to do as this will ensure they're protected should something unexpected happen to them. After all, a gadget case isn't always enough to protect your fragile phone from a big fall or an opportunistic thief.
Gadgets and mobile phones are our trusty companions, providing connection and security when times get tough - for example, what would you do if your car broke down and you didn't have your phone handy to call roadside assistance?
It's also worth bearing in mind that some gadgets and mobile phones can be expensive to replace - so if you couldn't afford to replace your phone or laptop should the unexpected happen, taking out phone or gadget insurance could be the best option.
So whether you suffer from “nomophobia” (fear of being without your phone) or you simply couldn’t afford to replace your gadgets should something happen to them, gadget insurance will give you peace of mind that your best tech is protected.
If you’re planning on taking all of your gadgets to university, then you may want to consider insurance so you’re not left out of pocket in the event of an accidental drop or spill – especially when you’re living on a student budget.
Think about how you’ll be using your gadgets - for example, will you take your laptop to lectures? Or maybe you’ll need a camera for your assignments?
How you use your gadgets may affect the type of cover you need while you’re at uni, and it’s also worthwhile finding out what cover is provided by your parents’ or guardians’ home insurance. While you may already have some cover in place under their policy, double check where your gadgets are covered while you’re at university (for example, in halls or off campus), as well as what your gadgets will be covered for.
While some home insurance providers will offer a level of cover for gadgets outside the home, this can depend on how long they will be away from the property, their value and their age. So it’s important to speak to your home insurance provider to check what’s covered.
Even if cover is provided under your home insurance policy, you may find that it isn’t as comprehensive as the cover you could benefit from with a separate gadget insurance policy – for example, you may not be covered to take your gadgets on holiday, or against risks such as loss or mechanical breakdown.
I have contents insurance - do I need gadget insurance too?
While your contents insurance may include some cover for your gadgets while they’re inside your home, it will not usually provide cover for your gadgets outside of your property, or against risks such as accidental and liquid damage.
You may also find that you have a higher insurance excess on your contents insurance than you would on a standard gadget insurance policy, meaning it may not be worth making a claim in the event of a loss. You could also lose any No Claims Bonus you’ve built up on your contents insurance over the years. You should check your policy documents for full details of the excesses you’ll need to pay in the event of a claim.
As part of Protect Your Bubble’s standard gadget insurance, you’ll receive:
*If loss cover is selected
It can be tempting to go with the cheapest quote, but you may find that certain policies are cheaper because they exclude essential covers.
Before choosing a policy, you may like to compare different insurers to make sure your gadgets will have all the protection they need. For example, do you require worldwide gadget insurance? Or cover for cracked screens? Or mechanical breakdown?
Making sure gadget insurance has everything you need, as well as being an attractive price, will help you decide on the right policy for you.
For the purposes of insurance, a gadget is usually defined as an electronic item which is (or can be) battery powered and is designed to be portable. As part of our partnership with Protect Your Bubble, you can get worldwide cover for all kinds of gadgets. These include:
Mobile phones (including smart phones)
Desktop PCs
Portable games consoles
And more!
With this cover, you’ll be insured for theft, mechanical breakdown (after your manufacturer’s warranty runs out) and even accidental damage (for example, if you drop your laptop down the stairs).
Your first gadget needs to be under six months old, your second gadget needs to be under 12 months old and third (or more) items need to be under 36 months old when you purchase the policy. If you’d like to add gadgets onto your policy after the initial purchase, they’ll need to be under 12 months old.
Gadgets must be in good condition and full working order when you purchase the insurance. If there is evidence that the damage occurred before the date your insurance goes into effect, this will result in your claim being refused.

While gadget insurance isn’t always expensive, who isn’t looking for a bargain? Here are five easy ways to reduce the cost of your gadget insurance:
Choose the right level of cover
Make sure the gadget value you declare for your insurance is correct, otherwise you could be paying to “over-insure” your belongings
Review your excesses
Increasing your excess could reduce the cost of your gadget insurance – just make sure you’d be able to afford to pay the excess in the event of a claim.
Make sure you’re not already covered elsewhere
If you have home or contents insurance in place, check whether they already include any protection for your gadgets.
Take out multi gadget insurance
You can sometimes get discount for insuring more than one gadget. For example, with Protect Your Bubble, you get a 15% Endsleigh discount when insuring up to two gadgets, or insure three gadgets for £15.99.
Over half a million students are protected by Endsleigh through their accommodation provider. Are you one of them? To make sure you don’t take out cover you don’t need, check and confirm your cover today via the My Endsleigh app.
