Have questions about gadget insurance, or not sure whether you need it to protect your phone or laptop? Check out our frequently asked questions below.
Let’s face it – it can be difficult to operate without our gadgets nowadays. For most of us, they act as our alarms, calendars and main point of communication with the outside world. But because gadgets are often out and about with us, getting knocked about in bags and back pockets, this can also mean they’re more susceptible to drops, spills and other types of accidental damage. Not only that, but some gadgets can be expensive to replace, especially if you’ve opted for the latest MacBook or iPhone.
Having gadget insurance in place helps to make sure you’re not left out of pocket should the unexpected happen to your gadgets.
If your gadgets are less than three years old, insuring them can be the sensible thing to do as this will ensure they're protected should they get lost, stolen or accidently damaged. After all, a gadget case isn't always enough to protect you fragile phone from a long fall.
Gadgets and mobile phones are our trusty companions, providing connection and security when times get tough - for example, what would you do if your car broke down and you didn't have your phone handy to call roadside assistance?
It's also worth bearing in mind that some gadgets and mobile phones can be expensive to replace - so if you couldn't afford to replace your phone or laptop should the unexpected happen, taking out phone or gadget insurance could be the best option.
So whether you suffer from “nomophobia” (fear of being without your phone) or you simply couldn’t afford to replace your gadgets should they get lost, stolen or damaged, gadget insurance will give you peace of mind that your gadgets are protected.
Do I need gadget insurance cover if my device is under warranty?
Even if your gadgets are still under warranty, this will usually only provide cover for mechanical breakdown or failure – which means your items won’t be protected against risks such as theft, loss, accidental or liquid damage.
With this in mind, you may choose to take out gadget insurance on top of your warranty to ensure your items are fully protected.
If you’re planning on taking all of your gadgets to university, then you may want to consider insurance so you’re not left out of pocket in the event of an accidental drop or spill – especially when you’re living on a student budget.
Think about how you’ll be using your gadgets - for example, will you take your laptop to lectures? Or maybe you’ll need a camera for your assignments?
How you use your gadgets may affect the type of cover you need while you’re at uni, and it’s also worthwhile finding out what cover is provided by your parents’ or guardians’ home insurance. While you may already have some cover in place under their policy, double check where your gadgets are covered while you’re at university (for example, in halls or off campus), as well as what your gadgets will be covered for.
While some home insurance providers will offer a level of cover for gadgets outside the home, this can depend on how long they will be away from the property, their value and their age, so it’s important to speak to your home insurance provider to check what’s covered.
Even if cover is provided by your home insurance policy, you may find that it isn’t as comprehensive as the cover you could benefit from with a separate gadget insurance policy – for example, you may not be covered to take your gadgets on holiday, or against risks such as loss or mechanical breakdown (both of which are covered with Endsleigh’s Premium gadget insurance).
While your contents insurance may include some cover for your gadgets while they’re inside your home, it will not usually provide cover for your gadgets outside of your property, or against risks such as accidental and liquid damage.
You may also find that you have a higher insurance excess on your contents insurance than you would on a standard gadget insurance policy, meaning it may not be worth making a claim in the event of a loss. You could also lose any No Claims Bonus you’ve built up on your contents insurance over the years. You should check your policy documents for full details of the excesses you’ll need to pay in the event of a claim.
You can also protect your belongings while you’re travelling abroad – Endsleigh can provide holiday gadget insurance for up to 120 days worldwide.

For the purposes of insurance, a gadget is usually defined as an electronic item which is (or can be) battery powered and is designed to be portable.
Endsleigh’s gadget insurance can cover:
Please note that we are unable to cover any gadget which is more than 3 years old when cover for it begins. Gadgets must be in good condition and full working order when you purchase the insurance. If there is evidence that the damage occurred before the policy inception date, this will result in your claim being refused.
Even the most careful people damage their gadgets now and then - which is why gadget insurance is there to repair or replace your gadgets when you need it. From getting a gadget insurance quote to making a claim, here’s a step-by-step guide to how gadget cover works:

While gadget insurance isn’t always expensive, who isn’t looking for a bargain? Here are five easy ways to reduce the cost of your gadget insurance:
Make sure the gadget value you declare for your insurance is correct, otherwise you could be paying to “over-insure” your belongings
Increasing your excess could reduce the cost of your gadget insurance – just make sure you’d be able to afford to pay the excess in the event of a claim.
If you have home or contents insurance in place, check whether they already provide any protection for your gadgets.
With Endsleigh, you can access up to 10% discount when you insure two gadgets, and up to 15% discount when you insure three or more.
If you have a TOTUM card, Endsleigh offer a range of insurance discounts exclusively for students, including bike, musical instrument, contents, travel and gadget insurance.
How do I know which is the best gadget insurance for me?
While it can be tempting to go with the cheapest quote, you may find that certain policies are cheaper because they exclude essential covers.
Before choosing a policy, you should compare the cover provided by different insurers to make sure your gadgets will have all the protection they’ll need. For example, do you require worldwide gadget insurance? Or cover for cracked screens?
Endsleigh’s gadget insurance policies provide cover for up to 120 days worldwide against theft, loss, accidental and liquid damage.
