Frequently asked questions about barn conversion insurance

Still not sure whether you need barn conversion insurance? We’ve answered some frequently asked questions to help.

Why types of barns do you insure?
open

There are three types of barn conversion in the UK:

  • Box construction, where the four walls hold up the entire barn’s structure
  • Cruck framed barns, which rely on internal timber A-frames to support the roof
  • Post and truss barns, which use vertically placed timber frame posts to support the entire weight of the roof.

Construction details for your converted barn will usually be included on the survey documents.

Check which types of barn conversion are covered with your insurer.

Can I cover renovation work?
open

Some insurers can provide buildings cover for barns that have been renovated into residential properties, however won't usually be able to provide cover for the renovation works themselves. The contractor completing the work would usually have some form of liability insurance in place to provide cover for faulty renovation work.
