What is gap year travel insurance?

If you’ve decided to take a gap year or a career break, our gap year insurance will cover you from three months up to one year anywhere in the world, whether you’re a volunteer, a conservationist or an intrepid adventurer.

Our cover includes protection for medical expenses, cancellation of your trip, loss or theft of baggage and personal accidents as standard. We'll also cover the cost of getting you home, if it's medically necessary.

We use a single insurer for travel insurance.

What's covered?

  • Up to £5,000 if you have to cancel or postpone your travel plans because of injury, illness or a family breavement. We'll also pay up to £250 for any pre-paid excursions
  • Medical expenses and the cost of repatriation, if medically necessary, up to £10,000,000
  • We'll pay up to £2,500 to replace damaged, lost or stolen bags and their contents including up to £350 for any valuables
  • Up to £500 for the replacement of lost or damaged passports, visas and money
  • Up to £5,000 if, after a 12 hour delay you choose to cancel your trip, or £20 for every 12 hours of delay, up to a maximum of £100
  • Up to £30,000 for a personal accident such as the loss of a limb or eyesight or if you are left with a permanent disability
  • Up to £50,000 towards legal costs if you need help claiming damages or compensation for an injury or incident

It can be useful to arrange your travel insurance at the same time as you book your trip, as this will ensure that you're protected for any financial loss if you have to cancel.

Your travel insurance will cover cancellation or curtailment of your trip if you are unable to travel because of an unforeseen circumstance, for example a family bereavement, illness or burglary.

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Medical expenses cover is also a major part of any travel insurance policy, no matter where in the world you are travelling. If you are travelling within the EU and have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), it can be useful to have travel insurance too. The EHIC only covers you for some medical treatment, and will not cover any costs associated with repatriation.
