CHELTENHAM JAZZ FESTIVAL: Endsleigh Battle of the Bands

Now in its second year, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Endsleigh, the student and graduate insurance provider, are teaming up to find the next emerging jazz stars.

All entrants will have their music heard by a panel of industry experts, who will shortlist the best entries and choose three lucky finalists to battle it out live on the Endsleigh Free Stage on Saturday, May 2. The winning band will not only have the chance to perform a 30 minutes set directly after the final, they’ll also get to chat to the judges after the performance and mingle in the Official VIP Room.

The 2015 judging panel will consist of Lewis Carnie, Head of Programmes at Radio 2 and 6 Music, Heather Taylor, Music Manager at RedfireMusic  (and Manager of jazz megastar Gregory Porter), and Dom Christophers, Music journalist and Music PR , Air MTM (look after artists such as Jamie Cullum and Curtis Stigers).

Entries in the form of a YouTube or SoundCloud link should be submitted via Endsleigh’s student hub. The hub from Endsleigh helps students and graduates before, during and after university. It offers articles, news and advice from fellow students and graduates, bloggers and industry experts to make life a little bit easier, The Endsleigh Battle of the Bands competition opens on Monday, February 16 on the hub. The hub from Endsleigh will be hosting this national talent search in partnership with Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Entry details

  • The competition will be open to full-time students studying in the UK and graduates.
  • Entrants will be asked to send in a YouTube video or SoundCloud link of their band performing accompanied with a website or Facebook page promotional piece via hub.ensleigh.co.uk/jazz
  • Submitted music must be ‘jazz’ or one of its related genres including swing, blues, funk and soul.
  • The Cheltenham Festivals panel of experts will be asked to select three bands to play on the Endsleigh Free Stage with a Live Final at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival on Saturday, May 2.
  • The winning band will be selected by the judges and an audience vote.
  • The winning band will then perform a 30min slot on the Endsleigh Free Stage.

Cheltenham Jazz Festival returns at the end of April (April 29 – May 4) with a bold programme that features a variety of classic and contemporary jazz, blues, soul and pop from a string of top acts including million-selling singer-songwriter Rumer, Dutch superstar Caro Emerald, trailblazing producer Squarepusher, the queen of soul Martha Reeves, world-renowned DJ Gilles Peterson, and former Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson.
