Significantly More Students Are Worrying About Technology, With a 17% Increase in Concern in 2020

[LONDON, UK, SEPTEMBER 2020]

Students are significantly more concerned about technology than they were in 2019, according to new research conducted by student insurance provider, Endsleigh. A survey of 414 university applicants found that 39% regularly or occasionally worry about experiencing technological issues, compared to just 22% last year.

With the coronavirus pandemic leading to online teaching and student accommodations being put into strict lockdowns, technology has become crucial for students to learn, socialise and manage day-to-day tasks such as shopping. 70% of applicants expressed concern about the impact of coronavirus on their academic experience, with 73% worrying about ‘staying on top of the academic work’ and a sharp rise in concern around building/maintaining academic relationships with tutors compared to 2019.

Respondents to the survey commented:

“I’m worried that I won’t get the real uni experience because of coronavirus.”

“I’m worried about not being able to have the full experience due to COVID-19 e.g. freshers’ week, online lectures and not being able to go out in the evening.”

Academic success remains the biggest cause of concern for applicants, with 85% worrying about this in 2020. Social interactions are the second biggest worry for applicants this year (84%), with a 5% rise in the number of respondents concerned about socialising since last year (79%). The social side of university is the main concern for applicants around the impact of the pandemic, with 73% expressing concern about being able to meet new people and make new friends.

Other aspects which saw an increase in concern this year include physical health (72% vs 62%), mental wellbeing (72% vs 67%) and personal safety (55% vs 44%). Despite facing new challenges as a result of the pandemic though, many students remain positive about their university experience, with a third feeling optimistic and a quarter feeling excited.
