What is heave?

Ground heave usually occurs when the ground is water logged causing it to expand and rise, it most commonly follows a period of flooding and can be particularly severe in winter as the water in the ground freezes and expands much more forcefully. Common problems associated with heave are serious structural damage to the fabric of buildings, a potentially continuous cycle of damage leading to an increased number of insurance claims, and long term damage which can take a while to become visible and therefore identified.
