It’s the most wonderful time of the year – that is, until you’ve got an empty piggybank to get you through to the end of January. But the festive period doesn’t necessarily mean you have to break the bank. We’ve included some useful hints and tips as to how you can save money without missing out on the Christmas spirit!
Don’t forget to ask at the till to have your student discount deducted. There are lots of shops which include a 10% discount (sometimes more) on items across the store, including Topshop and Topman, New Look, Jack Wills and plenty of others. The discount also applies online, so don’t forget sites such as ASOS and Missguided! Perfect for if you’re looking for presents for the family, or deciding whether to treat yourself to a Christmas party outfit.
Co-op includes a 10% discount for students with an NUS card on their food shopping. If you’re hosting a Christmas party with your flatmates, pop in and pick up your treats, with enough change for a hot chocolate on the way home! You might even be able to stock up your uni kitchen cupboard until you head home for Christmas lunch.
Why not make your own edible festive treats? Get together and make a festive chocolate log, rather than purchasing a ready-made one. Another idea is to organise a Secret Santa with your housemates, with a £5 budget. This way everyone gets a surprise and you don’t have to spend a lot of money – plus you’ll have fun finding a present!
If you’re heading home for Christmas, don’t panic about having to splash out on travel costs. If you’re travelling back via coach, then National Express and Megabus both offer student discount. Or if you’re heading to the train station, you can save up to 12% on a 16-25 railcard with your NUS card – and if you’re travelling further afield, don’t forget to sort out your travel insurance before you go!
It’s not just high street stores where you can save money. A number of restaurants across the UK are offering student discount on their menus, including Pizza Express, Giraffe and Chiquito, meaning you can opt for dessert (dieting can wait till January 1st right?). If you prefer a cosy night in, don’t forget Domino’s include 25% off when you spend over £25.
