Five apps to organise your student house

Let’s face it – when it comes to uni, you can never be too organised. Sure, your flatmates will poke fun as you arrange your cupboards by tin size. Or as you install a huge whiteboard to display your various rotas for house chores and activities (house dinner is held on Tuesdays).

But being organised also means you can make the most out of your uni experience, and make your life a lot easier in general – so here are five apps that will help you do just that.

1. Finances

When it comes to finances, most people will try to organise all of their income and outgoings on one huge, unmanageable spreadsheet.

Toshl Finance allows you to track all of your spending and expenses, as well as any bills that are falling due so that you can organise your budget accordingly. It’ll even highlight unnecessary costs to cut, as well as how much you’ve saved each month so that you can enjoy some guilt-free spending.

2. Splitting Bills

Trying to split various bills between multiple housemates can turn into a bit of a headache. However, there are various bill paying apps, such as acasa, that will provide you with a quote for all of the services you need in your area (such as gas and electric), and set the direct debits up for each housemate via an app on their phone so that they can keep track of their monthly bill payments. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that there may be a charge for this service.

3. Food delivery

There are some nights where you just don’t feel like cooking. Back in the day, you’d either have to trudge to the local chippy, or call up the local takeaway to have something delivered. Now, thanks to the likes of apps such as Deliveroo, you can submit your order and your payment details via a simple app on your phone so you can spend an uninterrupted night in front of the telly.

4. The weekly shop

With multiple people living in a house, more often than not you’ll be using a lot of the same basic ingredients and household items on a daily basis, so it makes sense to share the essentials such as milk, sugar and washing up liquid. However, you don’t want to be in the position where it’s always the same housemate purchasing all of the household items. By using apps such as OurGroceries, you can set up a house shopping list, allowing you to allocate items to each housemate to purchase and split the cost accordingly.

5. Chores

Nobody enjoys doing chores, but unfortunately they’re necessary unless you want to live with overflowing bins and the faint smell of rotting vegetables. However, there are ways of minimising the workload - apps such as Tody will allow you to input all of your household chores, and will keep track of when they actually need doing so you don’t spend more time cleaning then you have to. After all, you probably don’t need to clean the oven every day.
