‘Landlords not fixing things quickly enough’ is tenants’ number one pet peeve

New survey statistics released today by landlord and tenant insurance provider, Endsleigh, reveal the top tenant and landlord frustrations.

According to the survey of 2,645 UK tenants and landlords, the number one frustration for tenants is ‘landlords not fixing things in the property quickly enough’ (44 per cent), followed by ‘not being easily contactable or responsive’ (40 per cent) and ‘making cheap or quick-fix repairs’ (40 per cent).

The top frustration amongst landlords is tenants ‘damaging the property and furnishings’ (29 per cent), followed by ‘not informing about problems or damage’ (24 per cent) and ‘not completing the check out to a high standard’ (22 percent).

Findings also reveal that when a tenant left a property due to a dispute with the landlord, more than half (57 per cent) of the time this was due to the property being in poor condition; lack of repairs or damp were common reasons cited for tenants moving out. As well as expecting rental properties to be kept to a good standard, tenants also value acts of kindness; help with DIY (40 per cent) voted over a bottle of wine when moving out (9 per cent).

Marcus Latchford commented:“Property maintenance is key to ensuring a good working relationship between both tenants and landlords. Tenants want to live in a safe and comfortable home, while landlords want to rent to conscientious tenants who’ll look after the property and provide a reliable stream of income. Landlords should prioritise property maintenance if they want tenancies to last longer and save money sourcing new tenants; and tenants shouldn’t worry about contacting their landlord when the property requires a repair.”

2,645 respondents (1,428 UK tenants and 1,217 UK landlords) were surveyed as part of Endsleigh’s 2015 ‘Better Relations’ campaign, which aims to encourage stress-free lettings for both tenants and landlords.

To encourage and inspire good working relations between landlords and tenants Endsleigh has created the ‘Better Relations’ hub. The hub includes advice around the commonly missed checks before moving out, a list of do’s and don’ts for both parties based on the results from the survey and DIY maintenance advice articles and videos.
