Revealed: The Clumsiest Place in Britain and Who is Most Likely to Be Involved in a Mishap

New insurance data has revealed the clumsiest places in the UK, with people in the Midlands most likely to break, lose or damage their valuables.

Internal claims data from Endsleigh Insurance Services found that in 2017, almost a fifth (17 per cent) of the nation’s gadget claims were made in the Midlands, with females aged 20-24 most likely to claim for loss or damage to mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other gadgets.

Analysis of over 2,500 mobile phone claims revealed that people called Hannah and James were more likely to lose or damage their smartphone than any other. Charlottes, Jacks and Emmas also featured high on the list of clumsy names.

And the figures aren’t just linked to how common the names are – Chris, Anne, Sally and Stuart were revealed amongst the nation’s least clumsy individuals with the fewest number of mobile phone claims made.

Overall, 65 per cent of Brits admit to accidentally damaging their phone, with 34 per cent claiming to have dropped it on the floor, 7 per cent dropping it down the toilet and 6 per cent spilling something on it. 3 per cent of phones were damaged by falling off a selfie stick.

Females were most likely to have a smartphone mishap, making up 58 per cent of total claims. 78 per cent of these claims were attributed to accidental damage in and out of the home and 22 per cent accounted for lost or stolen phones.

Males were revealed as being the most careless with 30 per cent of claims accounting for misplaced handsets.

The data also revealed the clumsiest smartphone users by phone make, with Samsung users making the most frequent claims (23 per cent). Apple users made just 16 per cent, followed by LG and Sony (12 per cent).

The average cost for a Samsung handset claim was £368.91, with Apple costing just £310.95. Google handset claims on average cost an eye-watering £435.74.

Julia Alpan, head of marketing at Endsleigh, said: “Our data shows that we really are a nation of clumsy Brits, but it was surprising to see some of the emerging trends around location, gender and even certain names proving to be clumsier than others.

“Losing or damaging your valuables can be both costly and upsetting – whether it’s dropping your smart phone down the toilet, having a selfie-related incident or leaving a tablet or laptop on the bus.

“This is why it’s so important to make sure you’re protected with the right level of cover from your insurance provider to avoid being stung with expensive repair bills or having to replace your gadgets completely.”

With over 50 years’ experience, Endsleigh uses its expertise to provide home, motor, travel and gadget insurance, throughout student life, through to homeownership and beyond.
