No heating or hot water in your property? There may be a simple solution that will keep you warm and save you having to arrange for an engineer to come and sort the problem. We’ve put together a step by step guide to help you through it.
1. Is everything switched on?
It might sound silly, but first check that the gas, electric and water supplies to the boiler haven’t been accidentally switched off.
2. Check the thermostat and timer
If you’ve had a power cut recently, the timer may be out of sync and need resetting.
3. Has the pilot light gone out?
If you have an old boiler, check that the pilot light hasn’t gone out. To relight it, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Check the pressure gauge
Some boilers have water pressure gauges, which need to be at around one bar. If it’s not, it may be worth asking your landlord to arrange for an engineer to come and take a look.
As a tenant, you should only undertake this sort of maintenance if you feel comfortable in what you're doing. Further damage could make you liable for the cost of a repair.
