Making halls your home

Everyone wants to settle into university as quickly as possible, and making your room a little more homely can be a great place to start. Here are five ways to decorate the room you’ll be calling home for the next year, without getting out that paint roller.

1. Bring Blu-Tack

Universities don’t often take too kindly to nails through the wall or those who decide that their poster is better stuck to the wall with Pritt Stick. Make sure you know what you can use on the walls before you go sticking up your gallery.

2. Order your free prints

Rooms are definitely more homely with a few pictures up of your family and friends from home. There are lots of websites and apps which offer free photo printing, and you usually only have to pay for the postage charge.

3. Poster sales

Rather than purchasing extortionate posters from high street retailers before you come to university, it’s always worth looking into local poster sales. During freshers’ week, there’s usually a poster sale somewhere on campus. They’ll have a wide selection, so make sure to have a browse if you walk past.

4. Free posters and maps

It’s also worth looking out for promoters roaming the campus giving out free posters and postcards. There’s also a good chance that you’ll have a few maps of the campus by the time you finally get to uni. In which case it’s probably wise to put one up on your wall for decoration, but more importantly for reference.

5. A personal touch

The rest is up to you. If you want a lava lamp or fairy lights, then go for it! Though make sure you check with your uni beforehand. Everyone has their own way of truly making their room feel like home.

Now that your room is fully furnished and feels like home, it’s worth ensuring that your belongings are protected in their new surroundings.
