How to unblock a sink

Is the water in your sink not emptying? It may be clogged up. Don't worry though, here’s a step by step guide to explain what to do.

1. Plunger

Place the plunger over the plug hole and use sharp, rapid motions to try and remove the blockage from the sink.

2. Chemicals

You can pick up a chemical drain cleaner from most supermarkets. Before using any of these products to clear a blockage, make sure you have gloves to protect your hands.

3. Remove the U-bend

If the above methods don’t work, you may have to remove part of the U-bend under the sink. Before doing this, place a cloth on a bucket under the pipe. Once you’ve unscrewed the correct section, tip the contents into the bucket and replace.

As a tenant, you should only undertake this sort of maintenance if you feel comfortable in what you're doing. Further damage could make you liable for the cost of a repair.
