5 road trip destinations to try in the UK

Whilst holidays are great once you’re there, there’s no doubt that preparing for them can be stressful. But if all you want is to escape for a few days, road trips are ideal – all you need is a few clothes, a petrol-filled car, a destination, and you’re off!

So if you’re looking to hit the open road and indulge in some spontaneity, here are our top five road trip destinations in the UK.

Black Mountain Pass, Powys – Wales

Made famous by its appearance on Top Gear, the A4069 (also known as the Black Mountain Pass) crosses the Wales-England border, eventually running down the west side of Brecon Beacons National Park.

Atlantic Highway – England

Running 36 miles from Minehead to Barnstaple, the Atlantic Highway curtails all the way down the north coast of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, making for some exceptionally picturesque views. Swooping up and down with the landscape, the Atlantic Highway offers a sense of freedom you just won’t find on the motorway.

North Coast 500 – Scotland

Labelled as Scotland’s ‘Route 66,’ this is a 516 mile scenic route around the north coast of Scotland. Starting and ending at Inverness Castle, the route highlights the best views and landmarks that Scotland’s North Highlands has to offer.

Snake Pass, Peak District – England

Running through the Peak District, Snake Pass is famous for its tight bends and steep climbs – so you’re guaranteed some serious photo opportunities! However, it’s important to drive carefully on this 20 mile stretch of road, as it does have a high rate of accidents.

The Dark Hedges, Ballymoney – Northern Ireland

Although this isn’t a very long drive, you won’t find anything else quite like it. The Dark Hedges is an avenue of Beech trees that were planted in the 18th Century. And if you’re a fan of Game of Thrones it’s certainly worth checking out, as parts of the show were filmed there due to their eerie natural beauty.
