Every student knows what it’s like to watch the pennies, whether it’s opting for the supermarkets own brand foods, or wrapping up in an extra blanket rather than turning the heating up again. Amsterdam
Ideal to visit at any time of the year, the Netherlands’ capital has much to offer. Two to three days will give you plenty of time to go exploring and make memories. Remember your comfy shoes as everything is within walking distance, unless you fancy joining the locals in cycling around the city. There’s lots of museums to visit (booking online in advance will save you spending more at the door), as well as market stalls and friendly cafes. Keep the costs down by eating at one of the little hideaway sandwich shops, as well as staying in one of the many hostels available.
Barcelona
A perfect combination of art, history and food. Whether you’re looking forward to a relaxing few days in the sunshine or aiming to squeeze in as much as you can on your break, the Spanish city has something for everyone. Explore the artwork of Gaudi and Picasso, spend a day at the beach, or enjoy traditional tapas whilst keeping to your budget.
Edinburgh
A city break doesn’t always mean going somewhere outside of the UK. The capital of Scotland has plenty to offer, at just a short train ride away, from touring Edinburgh castle, to discovering art galleries and museums or spending the day exploring through the moors. Edinburgh is also home to the world famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with different acts performing over a number of weeks in the summer. Embrace the outdoors with minimum spending and keep your eyes peeled for a few kilts along the way.
Warsaw
A city filled with history, Warsaw has developed into one of the most beautiful cities within Europe, following the destruction left behind after the Second World War. Poland’s largest city holds most of its attractions on the western side, with plenty of museums, art galleries and places to eat and drink – plus an exciting nightlife! Warsaw prides itself as being a green city, so save your pennies by taking a walk around the town and seeing the sites.
Naples
The birthplace of the pizza… need we say more? With plenty of history and culture to offer, as well as enough cheesy carbs to keep you satisfied. You can explore some of Italy’s hundreds of churches, as well as its unique sculptures and artwork, plus you’ll be saving your money by walking around the beautiful city (as well as burning off the calories from all of the pizza, pasta and gelato).
