Christmas on a budget: Student edition!

Last updated: 02/12/2020

There’s no doubt that Christmas will be slightly different this year. But if there’s been one benefit of lockdown, it’s that a lot of us have been able to save plenty of money for the Christmas festivities.

But just because you’ve saved some cash doesn’t mean you can’t try to stretch your funds as far as possible over the festive season – after all, January can be a long month when you’ve got an empty bank account!

Here are some useful tips on how you can save money on food, travel, gifts, music and more with TOTUM - without missing out on the Christmas spirit!

1. Gifts for friends and family

With TOTUM you can access discounts at loads of high street shops, including Animal, Fat Face, New Look and more - perfect if you’re looking for presents for the family or deciding whether to treat yourself to a new Christmas outfit!

All of these stores currently offer delivery and/or click and collect services, so you won’t miss out even when you’re in lockdown.

Top tip: The discount also applies to online stores, so don’t forget sites such as ASOS and Missguided!

2. Christmas dinner

If you’re hosting a Christmas dinner with your flatmates, students can access a 10% discount on their food shopping at the Co-op with TOTUM. Alternatively, why not activate your 30-day free trial on Amazon Fresh? You could even use the savings to splurge on some extras for Christmas dinner – such as expensive crackers or a particularly decadent pudding. That’ll make up for not being able to throw a full-on Christmas party this year!

3. Secret Santa

You’ve probably spent A LOT of time with your housemates this term. But it can get expensive buying gifts for everybody you live with at uni – and your housemates probably feel the same way!

Organise a Secret Santa with your housemates with a £5 budget. That way everyone gets a thoughtful surprise and you don’t have to spend a lot of money.

Top tip:Struggling for ideas? You can get 10% discount with TOTUM at Half Moon Bay, ideal for any avid film fans in your student house!

4. Travel discounts

The jury’s still out on whether we’ll be able to have a normal Christmas with our families this year. But if you do end up heading home for Christmas, don’t panic about having to splash out on travel costs.

If you’re travelling back via coach, National Express and Megabus both offer discounts with TOTUM. If you’re heading to the train station, save up to a third on peak train journeys with a Railcard; including 16 -25 railcards, Friends & Family railcards, Two Together railcards and more!

5. Home salon

We all need to treat ourselves after the year we’ve had. So why not give yourself the pampering you deserve this Christmas from the comfort of your own home?

Get yourself looking fresh for the new year with 10% discount on your first subscription box from The Personal Barber, or 20% off a one-off box if you’re thinking about gift ideas.

For those of you that don’t shave, you could take advantage of up to 15% discount on nail care from Mylee, or get 10% off your first box with Feel Beauty.

6. Music

Just because you can’t throw a party during lockdown doesn’t mean you can’t channel the party vibe! With TOTUM you can get 20% discount at Urbanista when shopping for audio equipment online. A new pair of headphones could be the perfect gift for the music-lover in your life – or you could even treat yourself to a pair to celebrate the end of a tough year!

Top tip: Make sure you don’t run out of playlists over Christmas by using your TOTUM card to get 30 days free with Amazon Music Unlimited!
