What do I need to insure?

  • If you are adding up the cost of all the items you are taking to university don't forget to include things like clothes, accessories, DVDs and CDs.
  • If you are taking a laptop with you don't forget to add this to the laptop section as it is not automatically covered under the contents section if it gets damaged or stolen.
  • All the items that you want covered when you take them outside like iPods; cameras and mobile phones will need to be included in the quote.
  • If you want cover for your contents if you drop or break them in your home, then you will need to add accidental damage cover to your quote. If you add your laptop in the laptop section this will be covered for accidental damage anywhere in the UK and up to 30 days abroad.

My landlord tells me that I need to insure his stuff - how do I do this?

You can only insure something that you own - if your landlord wants his items covered for loss, damage and fire then he will need to take out landlords insurance.

If your landlord is asking if your insurance protects his items you can tell him that Endsleigh's product will cover your legal liability to his property up to £5,000. The policy does not include accidental damage cover to property owned by the landlord.

My parents have home insurance so are my things already covered?

Home insurance policies usually only cover the property at one permanent address and temporary cover away from that address up to 30 days - your student address will be a different permanent address for the entire time you are at university.

  • Home insurance policies will have a higher excess than a student contents insurance.
  • Any claim made could affect your parents no claims bonus and the cost of their renewal.
  • Home insurance policies will normally require proof of forcible entry - this is difficult in a shared house so we do not impose this restriction on our student contents insurance.

My university tells me they have provided my cover - how do I check this?

  • If Endsleigh is providing cover for your address through your university you can check online.
  • If Endsleigh is providing cover for your address through your university, the accommodation officer will provide you with a certificate detailing what cover you have and the limits; you can also access this information on the Endsleigh website.
  • If Endsleigh is providing cover for your address through your university and you need to increase the amount of insurance or add items to it you can do this online by getting a quote today.

I don't start for a while do I need to pay now?

If you are happy with the cover and the price, you can choose to start the insurance from the date you go to university, but will need to pay now.

  • By sorting it out now you avoid forgetting to do it closer to the time.
  • Your insurance will cover you transporting your goods to university so arranging it before you go will allow you to benefit from this option.
  • You cannot backdate insurance so if you forget to arrange it and something happens to your belongings you will not be able to make a claim.

How do I pay for my insurance?

  • You can choose to pay for your insurance online and over the phone with a credit or debit card.
How do I claim if something happens?
  • If you need to report a theft or a loss you may be asked to provide us with a police report number so have this ready.
  • You may be asked for a receipt to prove you had the item you are claiming for and it was owned by you.
  • Your policy documents will tell which cover sections you have selected.
  • You can make a claim by calling us on 0844 472 2506, a claim form is available online that shows the information we need from you.

If I claim how will this affect my policy?

  • If the item you are claiming for was selected on your policy and you no longer have it you will need to tell us when you replace the item and pay an additional premium to have the cover reinstated.
  • If you were entitled to a no claims bonus on your policy and you make a claim then this benefit will no longer apply to you.

If my housemates make a claim will this affect my policy?

  • Your Endsleigh student insurance policy covers your belongings so unless their claim involves you or your belongings then this will not affect your policy with us.
  • If there have been more than 3 claims at the property, regardless of who made the claims, you will need to inform us as this may affect your policy.

Will my things be insured when I am not there in the summer holidays and at Christmas?

  • If you have chosen to cover ‘Items left in your room during the holidays’ then your belongings listed under the contents section will be covered for up to 35 days whilst you're away from your property.
  • If you have not chosen this option your belongings will not be covered.

Will my things be covered when I take them outside?

  • If you have selected items on your policy under our laptop and gadget cover, things you take outside (i.e. cover away from the home), bicycle or mobile phone cover then these items will be covered away from the home.
  • If you have not listed any items on your policy then you will not have cover when you take them outside your property.

What happens when my policy ends?

When your policy is due to expire we will send you a renewal letter. This will tell you what you need to do to make sure you continue your cover.

We do not automatically renew student contents insurance. You will need to pay for the new policy before you are covered.
