Being a victim of crime

Why students are specific targets for burglars

Thieves increasingly target student halls and houses. Given the financial constraints placed on students, and the fact that they are around a lot more during the day than people who work, students might seem like an odd target. However:

  • Student houses tend to have a lot more high value, usually very portable goods, such as laptops, portable TVs and hi-fi systems.
  • Burglars are more aware of the regular times when students are out of their rooms – lectures, field trips, Easter or Christmas vacations.
  • Students often take a more relaxed attitude to safety and security, for example leaving their door unlocked in halls.
  • Often landlords do not change locks, so ex-tenants can still gain access. Many insurance companies do not cover for non-forced break-ins, but Endsleigh does.
  • Students are more likely to live on the ground floor in a house or in halls. This makes them more vulnerable, with their possessions on view for thieves.
  • During freshers' week there are lots of new people walking around so strangers can easily mix with a crowd and not be challenged.
  • Burglars are aware that student possessions are replaced new for old. This often results in students being targeted more than once during their student days.
  • Thieves often target the same student accommodation each year – i.e. they know which houses are easy to break in to.

Disruption caused by theft

  • A stolen or damaged PC or laptop can mean disruption to studies and immense inconvenience to students.
  • For many courses, students need specific equipment to help them with their studies. If this is stolen or damaged, students often find it hard to engage fully in their course.
  • Borrowing equipment from friends is not ideal. It can mean a student is more restricted in when they can work, and it is inconvenient for all those involved.
  • Endsleigh will replace most stolen items on a new for old basis. However this replacement cannot cover sentimental value or older items that might no longer be available
