Students are worth more

The Endsleigh Student Possessions Survey 2003 revealed that the average student takes around £4000 worth of belongings to university. An increasing number of courses require specialist equipment and books, and more students have high value consumer goods such as mobile phones, iPods or PCs.

Why students are a specific crime target

Student accommodation is often a key target for thieves. The average student house might not immediately appear a goldmine, but the high concentration of portable possessions makes them prime targets for thieves. It is typical to find several computers, TV's and hi-fi's in an average student's home and thieves are aware of this. Not only are students often more relaxed about their attitude to security, but burglars are quite aware of the times that student houses remain empty: lectures during the days, field trips and Christmas or Easter vacations. It is also often the same houses that are targeted each year.
