Case Study 4: Thieves enjoy students' quiet night in.

After enjoying a quiet night in with her boyfriend in Sneinton, Nottingham, Rachel Price, a student at Nottingham University, was woken by noises coming from her lounge at around 3 o'clock in the morning on Easter Sunday of this year. When the couple went to investigate, they found a burglary in progress, but a sofa had been pushed against the door to the stairs to prevent their entering the lounge.

When the couple managed to get into the room, they found the thieves had acquired entry to the property via the smallest kitchen window, and left by another window whose key was in clear view of anyone looking in from the outside.

Rachel lost a laptop, Playstation and games, and around 40 DVDs in the robbery. Her boyfriend also lost out to the thieves, but faced greater financial loss as he was not insured.

Rachel warns freshers and returning students that paying an insurance premium is definitely worth the initial expense, as it protects you from the greater financial damage that not being insured can result in.

Tim Larden, Marketing Operations Manager at Endsleigh Insurance, commented:

"Rachel's case really highlights why it is so important to make sure all your possessions are insured. Replacing lost items can be costly and inconvenient. Furthermore, thieves often target student accommodation at times of the year when they think students are on vacation, such as Easter or Christmas. Most students who are covered via their parents policies will find that they are not insured during the holidays. It's vital to make sure you have vacation cover if you're planning on leaving belongings in your room outside of term time."
