Case Study 1: Caught Napping

In January 2004, a Cardiff University student, Alison, returned home after a morning of lectures to find that her housemate, Jessica, had unwittingly disturbed a robbery.

Asleep while the other rooms were ransacked, Jessica was awoken when the robbers entered her room, with the intention of obtaining more loot. The robbers promptly left the house via the back door, locking it as they went, meaning that the locks had to be changed.

Both Alison and Jessica lost belongings - including two computers and a MiniDisk player although the thieves left smaller, sentimental items such as jewellery.

Luckily for Alison, her insurance policy with Endsleigh meant she received full compensation for items lost in the burglary. Unfortunately for Jessica, she had no insurance and so had to replace her stolen items out of her own pocket.

Thieves also know the best time to strike – such as when students are likely to be at lectures. In this case, Alison had made sure she was covered in the event of thieves striking – and Jessica probably wished she'd done the same."
