Van Insurance is a must for drivers who know little about repairing their vehicles.
Research conducted by Direct Line Breakdown highlighted that many drivers could actually do more damage to their vehicle by trying to fix it.
It is estimated that following a roadside breakdown 38 per cent of motorists attempt to mend their vehicle, although 77 per cent will fail to get the motor back on the road.
Just 11 per cent of drivers understand how an engine works and around 62 per cent don't have access to jump leads to solve the simple problem of a flat battery.
Direct Line Breakdown spokeswoman, Emma Holyer said: "It's entirely natural to feel out of your depth if your car breaks down and as cars become more sophisticated, it will be increasingly difficult for drivers to administer a self-help solution.
"The best advice any motorist can take is ensure you have breakdown cover for your car so you can call in the experts in the case of a problem."
