Risky driving practices highlight need for Van Insurance

Wed, 01 Jun 2005

Increasing dangerous driving practices have highlighted the need for van drivers to ensure they have appropriate insurance cover.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has discovered that driving too close to the vehicle in front and using mobile phones whilst traveling are the most dangerous motoring practices.

Over 50 per cent of the 700 motorists who took part in the IAM survey felt that these two habits could increase the number of accidents on UK roads and therefore eventually push up insurance premiums.

However, the survey also highlighted the fact that many younger drivers are unaware of bad driving practices, with just 30 per cent viewing driving whilst talking on a mobile phone as potentially dangerous to other road users.

"Tailgating and phoning while driving are activities which are a clear threat to the safety of others," said former transport minister and member of the IAM council, Steve Norris.

"No-one has the right to drive badly but the results of bad driving fill our hospitals every day."
