New figures show that many motorists are still continuing to drive in excess of the speed limit on many UK roads.

The Department for Transport has published statistics on vehicle speeds on UK roads for the past year. Although the actual proportion of motorists exceeding the speed limit has changed very little from 2004, there are still many drivers who feel it is acceptable to travel faster than the official speed limit.

On roads with a 30 mph speed limit, around 50 per cent exceeded the limit compared with 53 per cent in 2004, with 21 per cent travelling faster than 35 mph, compared with 22 per cent in 2004.

There were similar figures from motorways and dual carriageway driving, with more than half the cars on motorways and 48 per cent of cars on dual carriageways travelling faster than the speed limit, with 19 per cent were travelling faster than 80 mph on motorways, and 13 per cent on dual carriageways.

Being caught speeding can result in fines and penalty points on driving licences, which could mean many Young Drivers will find their insurance costs rising. In addition, more serious speeding offences can result in driving bans and possible prison sentences.
