Special laminated car glass could help to reduce the number of "smash and grab" attacks on UK road users, claims a leading manufacturer.
Recent Home Office figures show vehicle crime is on the increase and that many Young Drivers feel vulnerable to possible attacks, especially given the growth in so-called "traffic light muggings". Criminals often target the windows of a car because they are the weakest area but it is hoped the new glass could stop thieves gaining entry.
Citroen believe that one in six car owners would like to see the unbreakable glass become a legal standard over the next decade and it could help reduce the £1.4 billion insurance claims made each year.
What Car? magazine believes the glass, which is constructed of a polyvinylbutyral (PVB) interlayer sandwiched between two thin glass plies, could play a major role in improving the safety of Young Drivers.
Editor Steve Fowler added: "The example set by Citroen is widely applauded. Security glazing is potentially the most significant security development since the introduction of the immobiliser, so it really does need to be embraced."
