Airlines are meant to offer compensation for any lost luggage but many travellers could benefit from additional Holiday Insurance protection.
Recent figures from the Air Transport Users Council (AUC) show that the problem of delayed, damaged or lost luggage now accounts for 15 per cent of all complaints made to the AUC and there are concerns that the airlines could be trying to avoid paying adequate compensation to travellers, reports the Daily Telegraph.
New compensation rules mean that airlines can now face payouts of up to £800 per person if they lose a bag but often holidaymakers don't receive this amount because airlines ask for receipts for the entire contents of suitcases. In addition, the payouts also take into account depreciation.
In some cases, travellers could find they are entitled to greater compensation under the terms of their Holiday Insurance assuming their purchased a policy before jetting off.
Holiday Insurance can also provide protection against the cost of expensive emergency medical treatment as well as offering cover of stolen belongings.
