Nearly two in three women admit to losing or having their handbag stolen at least once, according to new research.
Insurance provider Churchill estimates that the loss or theft of handbags could be costing British women around £4.9 billion with the average replacement cost of £228 per bag.
The average handbag contains three credit or debit cards and one woman in eight reported that money had been taken from their bank account following the loss of theft of their bag.
Therefore women who plan to travel are being advised to make sure they have adequate Holiday Insurance to cover their bags and their contents.
"The theft or loss of a bag can cause a woman no end of problems, stress and worry," said Abi Clark of Churchill Insurance.
She added: "We carry a lot of value in our bags and it can take substantial time and money to cancel credit cards, have new home and car keys cut and replace lost luxury items too."
