The increasing willingness of pet owners to take out insurance for their four-legged friends is seeing old dogs live much longer.
Illnesses or injuries that would previously have resulted in a very long sleep are now much more affordable thanks to tailored Pet Insurance policies.
The trend started in the US where some pets have been elevated to a similar status to humans, with their own beauty parlours, health farms and even psychologists.
But the head of insurance for the Consumer Affairs Association of America, Robert Hunter, has highlighted a downside.
While old dogs are living longer, younger, healthier dogs who would otherwise have taken their place are often left without a home.
"Dogs aren't people," Mr Hunter noted.
