Pet policies fall short

20/04/2004

Some Pet Insurance policies often fail to meet the needs of customers, according to research.

The news comes as more and more pet owners turn to specialist insurance products as a means of avoiding spiralling vet bills.

One in three UK pets need to visit the vet because of illness or injury at some point in their lives.

Defaqto, which supplies financial information and data, suggests that many pet owners, were they forced to claim, would discover that their policies offered inadequate levels of cover and unexpected excess payments.

The Defaqto report, analysing 119 dog and cat policies from 50 providers, claims that policyholders are also susceptible to paying over the odds for a level of cover available more cheaply from other suppliers.

"When buying Pet Insurance there are a number of factors to consider and it is worth taking the time to read the small print," warns Defaqto analyst Brian Brown.

"For peace of mind, buy a policy that gives good cover for the worst case scenario such as a long-term chronic condition."
