Youngsters warned they need scooter insurance

Thu, 26 May 2005

Youngsters are being warned that if they use motorised scooters they must have adequate insurance.

Scooters have become increasingly popular but many youngsters are unaware that they need to wear a helmet and have a valid licence as well as a MOT if they take the vehicles on to a public highway.

"Lots of young people are shocked to hear that they can be disqualified from driving if they ride a motorised scooter irresponsibly, even if they don't have a full licence yet," police schools liaison officer PC Elizabeth Stanton told the Cheshire Chronicle.

"The majority of people who buy them do not realise they are illegal for use without the right cover."

Parents are being urged to ensure that their children either stick to off-road use in private areas or ensure they that have full cover and take adequate safety measures.
