Tempting criminals can push up motor insurance premiums

Wed, 10 Aug 2005

Leaving expensive satellite navigation systems visible could make your car a target for thieves and push up Motor Insurance premiums.

Police in Kirklees are urging drivers to ensure they don't leave their satellite navigation systems behind when they are not in their vehicle as the high-tech devices are tempting local criminals.

Over the past four months, a total of 135 satellite navigation systems have been stolen in the West Yorkshire region. The systems appeal to thieves because they have a high sell-on value and are not security coded.

"These systems are expensive to buy and thieves are on the look out for ones that have been left in cars," said detective constable Russ Conlon of Kirklees Divisional Intelligence Unit

He added: "Increased car security such as immobilisers and trackers are making it more difficult for vehicles to be stolen whereas portable satellite navigation systems are relatively easy to remove and are not security coded in the way car hi-fi systems are."
