Take out motor insurance before your cross-channel jaunt

Tue, 13 Dec 2005

Cheaper drink prices in France will see more motorists taking a cross-channel trip in the final run-up to Christmas; however, some could be travelling without a valid Car Insurance policy.

Lloyds TSB Insurance estimate that around two million people will make a last-minute dash across the Channel to take advantage of low-cost beverages and duty-free goods such as perfume and electronics- spending around £400 million.

Yet many drivers could find their insurance cover is only valid in the UK even though they are more likely to be involved in an accident driving on unfamiliar roads.

"With cheap drink available on the Continent it's no surprise so many Brits plan to cross the channel to stock up on booze for the festive season," said Phil Loney, Managing Director, Lloyds TSB Insurance.

"One of the most important things to consider is insurance. Although it's a must for any driver, when you're driving on foreign roads, especially during the Christmas period, it's even more important that you have adequate cover," he added.
