Motor insurance needed despite improving road markings

Tue, 06 Sep 2005

Plans to improve the UK's road markings do not mean that drivers can avoid paying Motor Insurance.

The installation of high-tech cats' eyes could help reduce the number of accidents related to tailgating, reports Auto Express.

The lit-up road studs would be automatically switched on to help mark out the required 10 metre gap between vehicles by glowering amber. If motorists are too close to the car in front, then the lights would turn red.

The devices are being developed by Oxford-based Astucia and are already used in Paris to help motorists around the city's ring road as well as keep vehicles within the speed limit.

A spokesman from Astucia said: "We're in preliminary talks with highways officials about how the technology can be used to stop vehicles travelling too closely together."
