The Association of British Insurers (AIB) and the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) have announced plans to improve the updating of information in the Motor Insurance Database (MIB), which should have a significant impact on uninsured driving.
The two bodies have suggested that the current 14-day period taken to input new Motor Insurance details for private motor business should be reduced by half, to one week.
The proposal is the result of research into how the MID can best support the new enforcement regime recommended by August 2004's Greenaway report into driving without insurance.
"We believe this new requirement will help deliver Professor Greenaway's vision of driving the uninsured from our roads", said Justin Jacobs, the ABI's head of Motor Insurance and risk pricing.
The planned improvements come after research released last week by Sainsbury's Bank found that uninsured drivers were costing other motorists about £600 million a year in extra premiums.
