Drivers licence checks could affect motor insurance

Mon, 08 Aug 2005

Businesses could find their Motor Insurance bill rising due to government plans to introduce harsher penalties for bad driving and subsequently increase driver licence checks.

The proposed Road Safety Bill aims to tackle the growing problem of dangerous driving on the UK roads and could mean more motorists will face losing their licence - a move that is likely to hit firms who employ drivers.

The increasing number of motorists who have three or more points on their licence, usually because of speeding or running red lights, means that many companies could see their insurance premiums increase over the coming 12 months - it is estimated by Brake’s Fleet Safety Forum News one in six fleet drivers currently have at least three points on their driving licence.

Fleet News recently reported that licence checks can help discover those members of staff who are driving illegally on work business, including the estimated one in 1,500 workers who are driving with just a provisional licence.

The industry advice is to encourage businesses to ensure they double-check that all employees hold a valid licence; otherwise they could face a substantial rise in insurance bills.
