Drive green and with motor insurance

Wed, 25 Jan 2006

Driving green could not only help the environment but could also reduce Motor Insurance premiums.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging motorists to adopt greener driving practices as well as being more responsible for their actions on UK roads.

The initiative should not only help to improve the environment but could also lead to less accidents and therefore less claims on Motor Insurance policies.

A guide produced by the SMMT lists a number of ways that drivers could improve their motoring habits including considering abandoning the school-run and replacing it with public transport as well as using journey planners to avoid being caught up in a traffic jam.

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said that drivers needed to take more responsibility for their safety.

"Simple steps like reading the Highway Code, taking time to fit a child seat properly and checking tyres regularly could prevent many people from needlessly coming to harm on the roads," added Mr Macgowan.

"Yet millions of motorists are guilty of taking safety for granted. The motor industry has a responsibility to drive this message home and every motorist should make it a 2006 resolution to do their bit."
