Drivers who car share their journey to work are being urged to ensure that their Motor Insurance covers such schemes.
The growing cost of commuting to work means that many people are giving a colleague a lift to work each morning to help share the cost of fuel and possible tolls.
However, recent changes to the insurance industry means that some providers are considering introducing a charge of £1 per trip to cover the cost of the additional commuter, reports the Scotsman.
Therefore people planning to save money and reducing congestion on UK roads could find that offering a lift could actually increase their Motor Insurance costs, despite government-backed schemes to encourage car sharing.
According to NationalCarShare.com, if everyone who drives on their own to work every day were to share a lift with someone once a week the commuting car journeys would reduce by around 25 per cent.
