Safe drivers could be rewarded with cheaper Car Insurance, as insurance providers worldwide consider offering pay-as-you-drive deals based on information gathered by a special black box.
Ministers are considering implementing the boxes in vehicles across the UK to determine the causes of accidents, the Daily Telegraph reports.
These boxes can then be used to determine if and how these accidents could have been avoided, helping to improve safety on the nation's roads.
Roads minister Stephen Ladyman claimed Britain's roads were amongst the safest in the world, but that the government is "aggressive" in its efforts to cut down further on fatalities.
The government is eager to encourage motorists to voluntarily introduce the technology into their vehicles themselves, and is currently reviewing methods of doing this.
Five years ago, the government set the target of reducing road casualties by 40 per cent by 2010.
