Canny thieves highlight need for adequate motor insurance

Tue, 02 Aug 2005

Canny thieves using sophisticated methods to steal cars are further highlighting the need for motorists to ensure they have sufficient motor insurance cover.

Many cars are stolen using their own keys, according to Tracker, a stolen vehicle recovery company. Figures show that the number of attempted vehicle thefts involving car keys stolen from owners' homes between doubled between 2002 and 2004. Worryingly number this has increased by a further 18 per cent over the past six months.

"Thieves are targeting car keys to get around the increasingly sophisticated anti-theft devices fitted to modern vehicles," said Parita Patel from Tracker.

"It also means they can steal cars without damaging them which makes it easier for them to sell them on quickly, often to gangs shipping stolen vehicles abroad."

Motorists are being advised to ensure they don't leave their keys within easy reach of thieves and to ensure that the vehicle is adequate insured against theft.
