Welsh cities crying out for decent pubs

Date: Fri, 04 Nov 2005

Drinkers in Welsh city centres are desperate for a good public house and a variety of pub landlord mortgage problems could help boost the region's drinking establishments.

The new Good Pub Guide 2006 does not contain details of any of Wales' city centre pubs even though it does praise 43 hostelries based in more regional Welsh locations.

Editor Fiona Stapley was keen to stress that it doesn't mean Welsh cities don't have good pubs just that they don't always appeal to passing through customers.

"Town pubs are a different kettle of fish to country pubs as they tend to be quite local," Ms Stapley told the Western Mail.

She added: "There are lots and lots of well-run locals and they may be great because they're round the corner from you. But they don't necessarily have a great deal of appeal for anyone passing through."

The growing range of financial help available to potential pub landlords could help to boost the region's long term public house prospects in time for next year's guide.
