Use cheap mortgages to invest in property

Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2005

Cheap mortgages could help more people invest in the UK property market.

A survey conducted by NatWest Mortgage Services reveals that a third of Brits would like to invest in the housing market if they had more disposable income.

In particular, London residents are keen to buy or upgrade to a larger property in order to take advantage of the capital's rising house prices.

The research also showed that around 23 per cent of people would like to invest in a second property abroad but would only do so if they could find a good deal that would ensure financial security.

"People are becoming much more astute when it comes to buying property and finding a mortgage, and clearly a lot more demanding in bagging the right deal," said Charles Haresnape, director of NatWest Mortgages.

He added: "They also want flexibility from the products they choose. This in turn could afford homeowners the flexibility to command an increased disposable income."
