Mortgages make up a significant part of the huge amounts spent by UK home workers on the running of their home offices, as the home rapidly becomes the essential workplace of the modern era.
A report by the Future Laboratory found that 53.1 per cent believe the home is becoming the new workplace of the 21st century, and that UK home workers collectively spend up to £149 million annually running their home offices.
The Freestylers and Work report also found that 69 per cent of those surveyed plan on investing more in the near future, which will undoubtedly include many people taking out mortgages on properties, as they look to secure the long term location of their business.
The report explained: "If the 20th century was about the 47.6-hour week for Brits, the 21st century is going to be about a new generation of career plan nomads who are rewriting the rules of time and work management in ways that suit their new approaches to work, rest and play."
Standard Life Bank marketing manager Ashley Ramsay said the report revealed the incredible future of the workplace and how it will affect the modern home.
"With eight million Brits working from home and a further two million spending at least one day a week there, the shape and structure of our homes are changing inexorably," she commented.
