UK mortgage holders could face energy price hike

Date: Tue, 03 Jan 2006

UK mortgage holders could find their fuel bills increasing over the next 12 months as suppliers continue to raise gas and electricity prices.

Two of the UK's main providers have already introduced new price tariffs for the New Year and the average household could be forced to pay an additional £100 to cover their energy use over the next 12 months.

Moneysupermarket.com, a price comparison website, is urging UK mortgage holders to ensure their shop around for the most competitive supplier in order to reduce their household bills.

"With plenty of cold winter months still to come, it looks like customers will bear a double brunt financially as the cost of keeping a house warm looks set to increase substantially in the New Year," said Paul Schofield, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com.

He added: "Whilst not all the providers are ramping up their prices, customers should beware of those that are and be warned that typically they could see annual increases of nearly £100."
