UK mortgage holders must avoid underinsurance

Date: Thu, 10 Nov 2005

UK mortgage holders are being warned not to underinsure their house contents this Christmas, especially if they plan to splash out on luxury goods.

Halifax are warning homeowners to double check their current contents insurance limits and decide if they need to increase them before the forthcoming festive period of shopping begins.

Many insurers offer policyholders increased levels of contents insurance cover for a nominal period before and after Christmas because they acknowledge that many people will be storing a number of presents in the run-up to the big day.

However, Halifax are also warning UK mortgage holders they may want to consider permanently increasing their contents insurance, especially if they are expecting Santa to deliver a few luxury gifts.

"Halifax policyholders can relax at Christmas as unlike most insurers it offers unlimited contents cover all year round," said Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter Halifax Home Insurance.

"With high-value items such as iPods, PSP's and children's favourite Bandai Tamagotchi~ likely to feature on letters to Santa this year a fruitful Christmas could boost the value of your home contents by hundreds or thousands of pounds," she added.
