UK mortgage holders need to think of their attic treasures

Date: Tue, 08 Nov 2005

UK mortgage holders are being advised to make sure they are not uninsured by neglecting how much their valuables are worth.

Many homeowners often underestimate how much their possessions are worth, according to Saga Home Insurance, especially if they are stored out of sight in the attic or in the cellar. In some cases, it may be worth getting single items valued and insured separately to more general household goods.

"Often the most unexpected items turn out to be valuable. If your possessions are undervalued, you could find that you receive only a fraction of their worth in the event of theft or damage," said Andrew Goodsell, Saga chief executive.

UK mortgage holders planning to capitalise on their possessions such consider the value of a wide range of goods rather than just the traditional antique Chippendale chairs. Increasingly objects from the 1950s, 60s and 70s are gaining in value, with items such as movie posters and records becoming extremely collectable.

People are also advised to make sure their items are security marked and they that take photographs of high-value possessions.
