UK mortgage holder benefit from going green

Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2005

UK mortgage holders could benefit from introducing green technology into their properties.

A study by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in partnership with a number of government and private sector organisations concluded that eco-friendly commercial buildings often sell more quickly and for a higher price than standard properties.

The report showed that tenants and buyers were both attracted by green properties, especially because they tend to have lower running costs and a more attractive environment, therefore UK mortgage holders should consider introducing eco-friendly systems as a way of boosting their selling price.

"Forty per cent of carbon emissions come from buildings. Finding incentives to make them ‘greener’ in design and operation is critical," said RICS's chief executive, Louis Armstrong.

He added: "The property and construction industries have a leading role to play in tackling climate change. This work shows that achieving real environmental benefits can also be profitable."
