UK mortgage holders urged to prepare for floods

Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005

The Environment Agency is warning mortgage holders not to ignore any potential flood risks.

The recent floods across the UK have helped to highlight the growing number of people who are unaware that they are living in high-risk areas.

The agency estimate that around two million properties in England and Wales are within flood risk areas, yet around 41 per cent of people are unaware that they could be in danger.

"Although we’re unlikely to see flooding in the UK like that caused by the Boxing Day tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, there is still a significant flood threat here from extreme rainfall and coastal surges," said Barbara Young, chief executive of the Environment Agency.

"We’re urging people to try to reduce the massive financial and emotional costs of flooding. So the message is: be prepared for flooding," she added.

Homeowners are being encouraged to make sure they follow flood warnings and work with local authorities in helping to combat any potential floods as well as ensuring that valuable possessions are kept in safe, waterproof locations.
