People planning a holiday should also consider ensuring they have adequate life insurance cover.
Price comparison website insuresupermarket.com is urging travellers to consider their insurance when booking a trip and, at the very least, they should ensure they have completed an E111 form.
"If you do nothing else, ensuring you have a valid E111 form is a good start to obtaining medical treatment abroad should you need it," said Richard Mason, director of insuresupermarket.com.
"However, since the E111 only covers treatment provided under the country's state scheme
it should not be seen as a substitute for a comprehensive insurance policy."
Holiday-makers should also make sure that they keep their travel and insurance documents in a safe place and be able to access them quickly if they need to claim.
